As a wine lover, I wanted to create a map of French wines with all revelant information concerning French wines. Usually when you are invited for dinner, us French people bring a bottle of wine. And very ofter, when a guest arrives with a bottle, I don’t know where the wine is from. I created this map to help me find where this French wine comes from, but also what are the varieties used.

Generally speaking, the wines of the North of France are more reputed for their white wines such as Chablis, Riesling, and Burgundy wines. The Rhone Valley and the Bordeaux wines are more reputed for their red wines. Saint-Joseph, Gigondas, Hermitage, Beaujolais, Saint-Emilion, Chateau Margaux, Medoc… and you absolutely have to taste the Condrieu white wine, my favorite ! The sweet white wines of the South West like Montbazillac and Sauternes are the best to drink with a slice of Foie Gras. Provence rosé wines are traditionally drank in summer, as an aperitive.

How to describe the 200 wine varieties in France ? There is no secret, you have to taste them… In this French Wine Regions Map you will find the wine varieties used for each wine region. For example, for Burgundy wines, the main grape varieties used to produce red wine are  Black Pinot, Grey Pinot and Gamay. For the white wines of Burgundy, the wine varieties used are Chardonnay, Aligoté and Melon.
